The Backhand Sweep Shot

  • With your stick, draw the ring back opposite your back skate.
  • Rotate your waist rapidly.
  • Snap your shoulders, arms, and wrists.
  • Direct the ring, and follow through towards the target.

The Forehand Sweep Shot

  • Bring your body weight over your back skate.
  • With your stick, draw the ring opposite your back skate.
  • Look at the target.
  • Push with your back leg, and transfer your weight over your front skate.
  • Rotate your waist rapidly, and snap your shoulders, arms, and wrists.
  • Direct the ring, and follow through towards the target.

The Stick Check

  • Check from under the stick or from the side of the body.
  • Keep your stick low and close to the ring while checking.
  • Make sure that you and your opponent are close enough to play the ring.
  • Don't try to check until you are close to your opponent.
  • Try to steer your opponent toward the boards to limit their options.

The One-Handed Carry

  • Use this carry only on open ice.
  • Keep the ring ahead of your body.
  • Try to roll the arm and wrist of your stick hand.
  • Pump you free hand in time with your stride.
  • Be prepared to switch to the two-handed carry.

Defence

  • Always control the middle.
  • Try to force your opponent to shoot from a poor angle.
  • Hold your stick with two hands or in front of your body with one hand.
  • Keep your weight over your skates.
  • Be prepared to move quickly in any direction.

Playing the Angles

Goaltenders

  • Play the angle on the ring, not on the player's body.
  • Telescope out to cut down the amount of open net.
  • Protect against the deke by telescoping back as the shooter approaches.

Shooters

  • If possible, shoot from the slot (four to six meters directly in front of the net).
