Etobicoke Ringette Association will be hosting a Special Members Meeting to pass new by-laws in accordance with changes to the Ontario Not-for-Profile Corporations Act (ONCA). ONCA, has come into effect, bringing changes to how not-for-profit organizations (NPOs), like ours, are structured and operated within the province.
As a result, existing not-for-profit corporations, including ours, have had a transition period of three years (until October 19, 2024) to make necessary changes to our incorporating and other documents to align them with ONCA requirements.
The key components affected by ONCA include:
Governance: ONCA establishes rules for how NPOs are governed, including the structure of the board of directors, the election or appointment of directors, and the conduct of meetings. These rules are crucial to ensure proper governance and accountability within our organization.
Membership: ONCA defines membership criteria, rights, responsibilities, and procedures for admitting and removing members. As a sports organization, we must adhere to these guidelines to effectively manage our membership, which includes athletes, coaches and volunteers.
Financial Reporting: ONCA mandates accurate financial record-keeping and annual financial statement preparation to ensure transparency and accountability in financial management.
The Executive of the Etobicoke Ringette Association, working with Sport Law, have drafted proposed by-laws which requires a vote by our membership in order to be passed and take effect.
